Could You Need a Root Canal

Could You Need a Root Canal

Find out if your symptoms are the result of an infected dental pulp.

We know you don’t want to get a root canal, but you don’t often have a choice if decay, infection or trauma has caused enough damage to a tooth to affect the health and integrity of the dental pulp. Our Coppell, TX, cosmetic dentist Dr. Rick Larson is here to provide you with some symptoms that could just mean that you need root canal therapy.

What is a root canal?

Most people have heard of a root canal but they aren’t quite sure what the procedure entails. Since there are a lot of unfounded myths and horror stories surrounding this treatment, many people just assume that it’s extremely invasive; however, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, getting a root canal is really no more invasive than getting a cavity filled.

A dental pulp is the soft tissue within the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. If the pulp is inflamed or infected it will need to be removed. Luckily, a fully developed tooth no longer needs the dental pulp in order to remain healthy.

What are the warning signs that you might need a root canal?

Since nerves are present within the pulp, it comes as no surprise that a damaged pulp will cause a pretty nasty toothache. The pain may be constant or intermittent. Using your tooth to chew or even biting down on the tooth can result in even worse pain. You may find that pain to be mild or severe. It may throb, ache or even cause a stabbing sensation. A toothache of any magnitude needs to be treated right away by our Coppell, TX, dentist.

Other warning signs include:

  • Lingering tooth sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Swollen, tender gums around the tooth
  • An abscess (a pimple-like growth that forms on the gums)

Don’t brush dental problems under the rug. If you are concerned with your smile, or if you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, then it’s time you turned to our dental experts in Coppell, TX, who can help make it right. Call our dental office today!
