Find out how to best handle a dental emergency if it happens to you.
Whether your child’s tooth was knocked out while on the field or you cracked a dental crown on an unpopped kernel, there are many factors that can quickly turn your situation into a dental emergency. From the office of our Coppell, TX, dentist Dr. Rick Larson, here are some of the most common dental emergencies we see:
- A toothache
- A fractured tooth
- A partially dislodged tooth
- A knocked-out tooth
- A damaged or dislodged restoration (e.g. dental crown; bridge)
What should you do if you or a loved one is faced with one of these problems? While your gut reaction might be to panic, it’s important that you keep your wits about you and immediately come into our Coppell, TX, dental office for emergency dentistry. The sooner you seek medical attention the better for the health and outcome of your smile.
If you have a knocked-out tooth it’s important that you collect the tooth (handling it by the crown only). Try to place the tooth back into the socket; however, if you are unable to place it back in the socket then place the tooth in a glass of milk or keep it between the gums and your cheek and immediately come into the office. A knocked-out tooth may be saved if treated within an hour of the injury.
The same thing goes for a displaced tooth. If treated soon enough Dr. Larson may be able to move the tooth back into the proper position. If the tooth is no longer viable, it’s also important that the tooth is removed and that it’s replaced as soon as possible to prevent tooth loss complications.
While most people wouldn’t immediately assume that a toothache is a dental emergency, it’s a sign that something isn’t right. It’s fairly common for a toothache to arise when there is a cavity present. Of course, a fractured or damaged tooth, as well as a dental infection can also lead to dental pain. The sooner you visit us the sooner the issue can be treated so that it doesn’t get worse.
Don’t let a dental emergency catch you off guard! Dr. Larson and his expert team are here to provide emergency dental care in Coppell, TX, whenever you need it. Accidents happen; get the dentistry you need to maintain a healthy smile.
